- Grungy Oxided Aluminum Hull ; OK, so you purchased a used aluminum boat and it has a grungy oxided aluminum hull. There can also be salt etched spider tracks on the whole hull that is not painted.
- The galvanized trailer fenders now looked a bit tatty, so I gave them a wire brushing, a cleaning, and a couple of coats of Rust-Oleum Cold Galvanized spray paint. The finish is not as hard as I would like, but the fenders look much better than they did before.
- Using a clean, dry rag, rub a little onto the surface of your trailer in an inconspicuous spot. Continue rubbing, and if there is no clear coat, the rag will begin to turn black. Continuing buffing with a fresh clean dry area of the cloth, this surface will polish to a brilliant shine. If it is clear coated, the clear coat may look cleaner, however the rag will not turn black.
- The layer of oxidation you are removing to "protect" the trailer is actually helping to slow down the corrosion process. It actually is a passivation layer which when removed, allows more corrosion to occur. Corrosion is the oxidation of metals and each time you remove the layer, you are removing more metal. Your application of a wax is also a layer-albeit a very temporary one.
